Dalton Eatherly โ "Chud the Builder" โ has been sitting in a Tennessee jail since May 13, charged with attempted murder after shooting Joshua Fox, a Black disabled veteran, outside the Montgomery County Courthouse in Clarksville. His supporters have flooded his GiveSendGo fundraiser with donations, pushing the total past $200,000 as of this week. There is only one problem: the $1.25 million bond set at his arraignment means he remains in custody, and the GiveSendGo funds are inaccessible to him until he gets out. Which he cannot do, because he cannot post the bond. It is, in the language of hip hop, a catch-22 wrapped in irony.
The Catch-22 Explained
Under Tennessee law, to post bond on a $1.25 million bail Eatherly would need to either produce $125,000 in cash or property, or pay a non-refundable 10% fee to a bail bondsman โ again, $125,000. His GiveSendGo fundraiser, while it has now surpassed $200,000, is linked to his personal account and cannot be accessed while he is in custody without legal arrangements that have apparently not yet been made. His attorney is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing on May 21 seeking a reduction in the bail amount. If successful, a lower bond could make the GiveSendGo funds sufficient to secure his release.
$200K raised. $1.25M bond. Still locked up.

While Eatherly's supporters have rallied online, so has the family of the man he shot. Joshua Fox โ described in court filings as a disabled veteran โ was shot in the stomach and shoulder during the altercation outside the courthouse. His wife set up a GoFundMe that has raised more than $250,000, with donations coming from across the country including a $2,000 contribution from former NFL cheerleader Natalie Kirkland. The GoFundMe description states that Fox and his children "are struggling through this difficult time." The preliminary hearing for Eatherly is scheduled for May 26. The internet remains deeply divided on whether the shooting was self-defense or a crime โ and both fundraisers keep climbing.
